Dr. Otávio Lopes is the Head of North America for IFC’s Liquid Assets Management (LAM) team, where he leads the investment strategy for IFC Treasury’s multi-billion-dollar ABS and macro portfolio in the United States and Canada. Over the course of his career, he has managed a broad range of assets across both emerging and developed markets, including corporate bonds, covered bonds, SSA debt, and asset-backed securities. He has also traded and taught extensively on derivatives—particularly cross-currency basis and forward points across multiple currencies—for more than a decade.

Dr. Lopes joined IFC in 2010, initially with the Financial Institutions Group, before transitioning to the Treasury’s Market Operations LAM team in 2014. Prior to IFC, he worked in M&A at HSBC and in private equity with Blackstone/Pátria Investimentos in Brazil.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. Lopes is a long-standing faculty member in the Columbia-IFC and Milken-IFC executive programs, and regularly teaches in IFC’s Global Capacity Building initiative for central bankers in emerging markets. Externally, he serves as a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

He holds a Doctorate in International Affairs and a Master’s in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins SAIS, an MBA from FIA São Paulo, and two bachelor’s degrees, one in International Affairs from the University of São Paulo and another in Business and Finance from Fundação Getúlio Vargas. He is also a CFA charterholder.
